As far as I know, you need the “neutral” wire because it provides power to de inner electronics of the switch, otherwise it would power itself down when you tell it to switch the light off. That is why your other option does not need the neutral, because it uses batteries to power itself on.

Great video. Very Interesting product. : )

Steve Long says:

Tp-link does not REQUIRE a ground wire. If you still have the switch, I would suggest trying again.

Alexis Aguero says:

The TP link does NOT require a ground cable also known as a earth wire. However, it does require a neutral wire. I think you might have confused the two. A ground wire is optional and adds protection in case of lighting strike or such, a ground wire is usually bare (cooper color) or green. The neutral wire is required to provide power and that color is usually white, which from the picture in the video, I see white wires deep in the box. So yes, the TP link light switch does work in your house.

does the switchmate now work with Alexa?

Tim Sawyer says:

The TP-Link doesn’t come with a manual, but it does come with an interactive smartphone app that walks you through the installation, complete with motion diagrams. (It’s better than a manual, in my opinion.)

It also clearly states that while a neutral (white) wire is required, connecting to a ground (green/copper) wire is optional. If you have a neutral wire but not a ground (as you indicate in your video), you may want to try it again, using the app to guide you through.

Hope this helps.
