Interior Design — Modern + Vintage Kitchen Design

Designer Alison Milne shares a kitchen she designed for a young family with a dual design aesthetic: modern and mid-century modern. See how the sunny, graphic space came together with lots of natural materials and smart storage ideas.

The homeowners each favored a different decorating style, so Alison found a way to use both. The kitchen’s upper cabinets are mid-century modern while the walnut lowers are more modern. To tie the two looks together effortlessly, Alison brought in large subway-style marble tiles for the backsplash and Caesarstone countertops that have a natural, concrete look. The handsome armoire is the perfect place for pantry items and a recessed bookshelf adds even more storage. To top it all off, an outdoor porch was transformed into a bright breakfast nook off the kitchen for the whole family to enjoy.

Looks really great. The US has a strange concept of contemporary/modern kitchens. A ‘modern’ kitchen in the US is still a shaker style?? ‘Modern’ style kitchens in Europe are typically handleless and actually not too dissimilar from those lower cabinets, perhaps in a solid colour though.

One question though: Personal items? Where are they? Also books look like they are there for aesthetic reasons not because someone reads them. Other than that, wonderful kitchen.

Heather Forrest says:

This kitchen is exceptionally boring! It lacks luster and is overwhelmingly bland. Upgrade is necessary and just allow spontaneity to give it some happy personality! Thank you, kindly.

creations landscape designs says:

I never understood why people take valuable space from the landscape to expand the architecture to create extra space that may not get used often. Poor wildlife have less space to roam hah

Connie L. says:

Nice but very sterile explanation of the design… “the female of the relationship” instead of the wife or just client works…. “full of products” in place of food. Weird.

Craig Merkey says:

very soothing!
